A Bit About Lucas

Lucas Lawson is a singer, songwriter, and gatherer of friends who help to bring his harmonious music alive. Having grown up on a small organic farm just north of Santa Cruz, CA, Lucas and his songs are rooted in the balance and connection of all living things. He first learned to play the guitar at the farm’s barndances, strumming alongside local bluegrass group, The County Line Pickers.

Immersed in bluegrass from a young age and having studied music in college, Lucas has cultivated a blend of the raw intimacy of folk with the deep complexity of orchestral arrangement and composition. In 2024, Lucas arranged two fiddle tunes by Andrew Marlin for solo mandolin and string orchestra. In December of 2024, he then performed the piece with the Cabrillo College Symphony Orchestra. Since then, Lucas has developed a passion for the art of arrangement and composition, reimagining acoustic music into orchestral-style pieces. He's continuing his study of Music Composition through Berklee School of Music's Online Program. As a multi-instrumentalist, you can find Lucas playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle, claw-hammer banjo, upright bass, dobro, drums, and piano.

The inspiration for Lucas’ song writing and musical composition stems from his wish to pay respects to the land, customs, and communities that have supported him. In November 2022, Lucas released his first ever album This Dirt, honoring all that was lost in the devastating CZU Complex fires which burned over 80,000 acres. In his most recent album, Flowers on the Road (October 2024), Lucas returns to his bluegrass, acoustic upbringing while sharing new stories. Flowers on the Road honors mortality while beckoning listeners towards an unpredictably invigorating life. Lucas taps into the emotional experience of life’s journey, touching on his own path to convey these ideas. Lucas hopes both albums will advocate for the care our world deserves and aid in transforming loss.

Flowers on the Road and This Dirt were recorded at Quilted Fish Studios with engineer Mike Formenti and features other local musicians. Lucas also works at Quilted Fish as a producer and engineer himself, bringing other musician’s visions to fruition.

He is passionate about helping others find their musical voice whether through teaching, producing, or accompanying other musicians. To Lucas, music is much more than sound. It is a powerful tool for change, a means for connection, and a source of love -- all of which are woven into the cadence of his songs. Each one is an outstretched hand, inviting us to experience this wild, beautiful life together.
